Saturday 24th June 2023 

Our two teams travelled up to West Hamstead.

It was a very warm day but apart from the heat the tournament was a very well organised and enjoyable though tough event.    

Every player in every team was a serious chess player and the ratings meant very little.    

The 1st Team were in a tough section but finished with a creditable 2 Wins 2 Draws and 2 Losses. Points were shared fairly evenly across the team with Daniel Donaghy scoring best with 4 out of 6. We were only outclassed in one match and that was against the ultimate winners Wanstead and Woodford.

The 2nd Team did better with a 4th Place finish out of 18 Teams scoring 3 Wins 2 Draws and just 1 Loss. Daniel Longley took the Gold Medal for Board 2 with a score of 5 out of 6 only losing in the first round while Luke Freeman won the Board 3 Silver Medal also on a score of 5 out of 6.

A very enjoyable day with the teams travelling back on the same Thameslink train however I thought I had lost half of them when they got off at London Bridge instead of East Croydon. However no need to worry it was just the allure of a MacDonalds.
