A rather bizarre end to the tournament.
I was due to play the top seed, Terry Chapman on board 2 with the black pieces needing a victory for any chance of the title.
I arrived at the venue early for the scheduled 10:00am
start and prepared myself for an interesting game possibly a Catalan.
However my opponent did not arrive by the default time of 10:30am and
the arbiter came over stopped the clock and awarded me the match.
I was re-paired in a friendly and very enjoyable game
against Michael Gunn who's opponent had also failed to turn up. In the
meantime Sheila Jackson and Alan Punnett decided to end hostilities
meaning that all three of us gained the title of British Over 65
Champion.
That evening I went out for a celebratory meal and could not resist the cauliflower starter called Gobi 65.
This was the win that unbeknown to me at the time gained the trophy.
I wasn't quite sure which variation John would play but
having played hundreds of Italian games online but zero showing on the
player database I was fairly confident I would not be out prepared.
As it turned out I was quite happy with my unusual but
topical 11.Qa4 move. The resulting kingside attack gained me the
exchange advantage and I managed to convert the resulting endgame into a
win.
I was pleasantly surprised by Leicester. We stayed in a rented house
about 3 miles outside of the city centre centre and caught the 31 bus in
each day. A 15 minute walk along the high street, past statues, clock
tower, childrens carousel, interesting shops and short stops to chat to
the evangelists both christian and muslim, not forgetting the hindu
centre and of course the shops selling lucky charms, was a good prelude
to a tough chess match.
The playing conditions were excellent as were the arbiting
team the only drawback was the lack of space in the analysis area. This
also affected the parents of the junior players who I understand had to
wait in a building about 3 minutes walk away from The Venue.
