|12.10.2020 - The Rat Simul
I hope everybody enjoyed The Rat simultaneous exhibition the other day. I
certainly did. It is a little known opening that is super-easy to play.
All the moves are thematic and take little thinking time in the early
stages of the game. As everyone can clearly see, The Rat is a forced win
by Black from move 4! If you look at the statistics it shows that it might be the strongest defence for Black there is! Black wins 54% of the time, White only 10%!
In the simul, I had 3 wins and 6 losses. Most of the games were won
positions but there wasn’t enough time allocated to me! I will cover
that below. Given an extra 30 minutes, I think I would have had 5 wins, 2
draws. The game against HLS20 seemed level, until I got very low on
time. I had a tough game against Markapp74, where I also blundered a
complete rook due to having to move instantly!
When you’ve never played in a simul before, you don’t know what to expect. So I have a few takeaways...

|28.09.2020 - Worldwide Junior Team Battle XIII
Congratulationa to all our players who were in our Worldwide Team on Saturday special mention to Ben, Peter, Lucy, Elena and Raina who all have Birthdays in September.Despite flirting with relegation for most of the 1st half of the tournament we repeated our 5th place finish in Division A. I had warned at the start that the three promoted teams from Division B were very strong and I was vindicated in my comment in that they finished 1 - 2 - 3 with last time winners Team Krasyliv finishing 4th. So a 5th place by our team lead superbly by ArchiePawn was impressive.I hope I did not get carried away in the Zoom commentary by twisting players arms to continue playing as they were tiring in the last ½ hour. This plea was certainly listened to by our regular speedy player
Chess-Feminist whose flurry of last minute games confirmed our 5th place. All the results and games can be found at https://lichess.org/tournament/UkyZHjCn

|26.08.2020 - New Season 2020-21
To All Members and Prospective Members
The Crowborough Community Centre is having a phased re-opening
and is not ready to welcome us back in September and when we do return the
English Chess Federation has quite a strict but not impossible Risk Assessment
This may entail social distancing, for instance hiring the
main hall rather than the meeting rooms and playing on separate boards and
calling out moves or other methods of safely playing.
Until the decision is made to return we have decided to
re-open ONLINE as we were during March, April, May and June.
This will include;
· Weekly meetings on Fridays 6:30pm-9:00pm
on LICHESS and ZOOM. Similar format as before. These were popular with about 25
entries each week.
· I will be running a training session for
juniors teaching chess basics on ZOOM. I will consult on day and time but was
